Big Blue X: New Song, Pulses (Your Light)

Big Blue X has a new song, Pulses (Your Light). This song has character, check out the acoustic demo on our main site: www.BigBlueX.com

We're going to re-record Pulses (Your Light) with the full band & some piano in September, the new version is more moody, it's quite different from the demo thanks to the new band members. To learn about the exceptionally talented new guys, John & Bobbyji read the updated Bio.

Ananda Fest

We played under the fire-sky sun, ran off about 10 songs. Brian sang amazing, Bobbyji on Tablas pushed the groove to new levels, and Carl mixed it up playing guitar on a few songs adding a piano on some tunes. John made the grade and closed out the set with slick bass lines on "Some of Us... Want Freedom". Check out these pictures. The Ananda Fest weekend was great, right on Lake Simcoe, we all had a chance to take a dip in the lake, and take in David Hickey's set after ours.

New Bass Player

We have a new (our 1st) bass player. We've been jamming with John for a few weeks now, so far he's brought a ton of ideas to the songs, and we're one step closer to adding a drummer. We are hoping to get a tabla drummer to take the sound in a slightly different direction once again. We've got some gigs in the works around Toronto/Hamilton (dates to be announced soon) and will be releasing more songs in 2011.

The whole 'band' is starting to come together, the songs are sounding great as we keep working them out, and the live set is sounding sharp. I sampled some cool sounds for song intro's, things like wolves, whale songs and pieces from our favorite movies.

"Mother" is next on our list to record, we've got a lot of invitations from various studio's that want to work with us just because they like our songs, which is always good to hear. And my home studio is going to get fired up again as John lays down some bass. It always sounds awkward saying how great we think we are, but after playing music all these years with tons of different bands all the guys in Big Blue X are sounding like music fans the way we talk, the excitement and passion is there! Something we see most bands lacking in favour of fame, glory and fortune. As always, time will tell, we just need to make it happen, and that's the plan!

Hi,

New Big Blue X song, Prepare For War (live recording), download it for free, it you like it forward this email to all your friends. And we have a gig scheduled for August 8th (details below).

It took a few weeks to write Prepare For War, it's one of our favorite songs to play, it's got a lot of melody. Initially we had about 3 songs worth of lyrics, Brian tossed most of them out and added some new ideas.

As you may know, we've been talking like idiots about recording - it's been a slow climb, the best we could do right now is to release a live recording straight off the mixing board. Prepare For War is from a gig we did in early June in a small pub in Toronto, it's a FREE download so don't be shy.

The mix is super rough but for now this should give you a good idea of where we're at - I did some mastering magic to even it out. The goal is to still get some better studio recordings.

We've got a gig scheduled for August 8th, Toronto (Dundas & 427) - it's an all ages gig, we go on at 2:30pm.

Prepare For War (Live)

Prepare For War: It took a while to get this written, initially I had about 3 songs worth of lyrics. Brian tossed most of them in the trash and added some of his own ideas. As you may know, we've been talking like idiots about recording - we'll it's been a slow climb, and the best we could do right now is release a live recording straight off the mixing board. The Prepare For War is from a gig we did in early June in a small pub in Toronto, it's a FREE download so don't be shy.

The mix is super rough but for now this should give you a real good idea of where we're at - I did some mastering majic to even it out. The goal is to still get some better studio recordings. Hopefully the next song we release will be one of our sunnier sides, to balance out things.

In the meantime we've been messing around with some cover songs, a couple of Beatles songs here and there, The Rooster by Alice in Chains.

War Song

We're working on a new song "War Song" - jammed with a drummer last week, it gave us a different perspective on our songs after playing acoustically for so long, although the main focus is still getting back into the studio to release more songs acoustically.

Big Blue X is playing live @ West7 Nightclub & Lounge on Friday Feb. 26 - going on at 9pm.

The club is on the edge of Georgetown/Brampton (Ont, Canada). We're adding 2 or 3 cover songs into the mix, including a little Bob Marley. We've developed loads since releasing Escapism nine months ago, we actually sound like we know what we're doing now :-) Gig details and a status update are below:

Songs & Studio Update: Brian 1/2 turned his garage into a sound proofed rehearsal room and bought a piano, which we use as a beer table. We're heading back into the studio in the spring to finish "One Step (Closer to the Sun)". Then we're going to work on a 4-6 song EP. We've also got another new song on the go, "The Ocean (is My Woman)" which we'll be playing live from now on.
More Gigs: We're going to start doing 2 sets, with a 50/50 split of our own songs and some covers, so we can play around the pubs.

Last night we finished off vocals and a rough mix for "Escapism Generation Waste". We're going back on Saturday to tweek the mix, and start working on a 2nd song, probally "Swim", or "One Step Closer to the Sun". Brian is going to play some piano on Swim. We also took some video which will end up as "The Making Of" kind of footage. - Carl

Now we've changed the plan again. After doing another round of demos in Carl's home studio we decided to release Escapism Generation Waste as the first song. And we're back in the studio in 2 days to finish it... just in time for spring.

OK, we've got studio time booked for the end of March. We're aiming to finish "I Would Swim a Million Miles". In the meantime we're recording some more home demo's which we may preview on this site... depending on how they turn out. We're also getting itchy to play a gig, it's been a while.

A boring update - More delays...

Yes this is a boring update... As seems to be the norm these days our studio recording is delayed again. The studio we are using is booked to the max with a few other projects that started before ours. So we're now looking at going back the end of Feb. to complete things. In the meantime we're not planning any gigs just yet, instead we're working on song ideas and minor tweeks. The delays seem to be for the better in terms of the quality of the finished songs.

Time has flown by, our last gig in 2008 was September 19th, after this gig we became more focused on getting ready for the recording studio. At B-Town studio's in Burlington, Ontario we demo'ed 10 songs live off the floor in early November. At the end of November, in 3 days we re-tracked 10 songs, this time taking a bit longer to get better sounds and re-work a few arrangements. We spent almost an entire day just on "Your Light Pulses" after scrapping the initial version and trying to come up with a groove that make the song what we thought is should be, it ended up as one of our stronger songs. In December we worked on some final touches to "Your Light Pulses", giving it a rough mix to hear where it might want to go. We decided to re-record "Mother" with a real piano as the main sound; which we're hoping to redo in early 2009. And figured that "Swim" would be a good song as the first release. Later in Jan '09 we'll be finishing up guitars and percussion on Swim, and experimenting with piano parts along with vocal tracking. So far this song is sounding as big as the open ocean. Hoping to get this track finished in Feb and up on the site.

Finished off 2 more songs this week for the album. It's looking like a 10 song album is making the best sense to our ears. Won't be playing the 2 newest songs tonight at the Reverb, but we do have some other recent additions in the set.
